Deposit on small bottles

From 1 July 2021 a deposit will be introduced in the Netherlands on small plastic bottles for soft drinks and waters. Preparations to ensure a smooth introduction are well underway and are being coordinated by a specially established organisation: Statiegeld Nederland. This will also affect you as a customer of FoodsAndGoods.nl. That is why we have summarised here what will change and what it means for you.

What changes on 1 July 2021?

  • From 1 July 2021 all small plastic PET bottles for soft drinks and waters will fall under a single unified deposit system.
  • Large PET bottles will retain a deposit and will also be covered by this new legally required system. (Large = all PET bottles equal to or larger than 1 litre. Small = all PET bottles smaller than 1 litre).
  • Producers/importers are required to charge a €0.15 deposit on small plastic bottles and for large bottles this remains €0.25.
  • All PET bottles (large and small) covered by the new deposit system will receive a new deposit logo and a new EAN code. There will also be many more collection points; partly mandatory and partly voluntary.
  • The deposit system will not apply to juices and dairy in small plastic PET bottles.

So for a while there will be 2 types of small PET bottles in circulation: bottles with deposit and bottles without deposit. To distinguish them, bottles subject to the deposit will receive a new deposit logo and a new EAN code.

What does this mean for you?

At FoodsAndGoods.nl we will first sell through our old stock. This means that it is possible that bottles without deposit may still be sold after 1 July. You can simply dispose of these bottles with your other plastic waste. After 1 July you can also return these at a collection point, for example a supermarket. Because you did not pay a deposit for these bottles you will not receive a deposit refund. But this way you are sure your bottle will be recycled correctly!

It is also possible that before 1 July we will already have new stock of bottles that include a deposit. The deposit will be charged when you complete your order and will be shown separately on your invoice.

After 1 July these bottles can be returned at supermarkets and staffed petrol stations. These locations are obliged to accept the bottles. In addition there will be voluntary collection points, for example places where you can buy the bottles such as sports clubs or theme parks. Would you like to register as a voluntary collection point? See www.statiegeldnederland.nl for more information.
